Located in Johnson County, Kansas, Shawnee offers a high quality of life for its more than 63,000 residents. Careful city planning and economic development have ensured the protection of quiet residential areas, and while community services are modern and comprehensive, property taxes remain low. In 2010, Money Magazine rated Shawnee #17 in the “Top 100 U.S. Communities,” adding to accolades from the National Civic League (“Top 20 All-America Cities,” 2007), Business Week (most affordable suburbs, 2006, 2008) and the League of American Bicyclists (Bronze Award for Bicycle Friendly Community,” 2007).
Named for the Shawnee Indians who were relocated here in the 1820s, Shawnee was the site of the first territorial legislature and first home of the county offices. Emerging in the last half of the 20th century as a comfortable suburb with active community involvement and support, Shawnee lives comfortably with a respect and understanding with the past (including the Downtown and Around the Corner: Historical Walking Tour) and the future (as home to major and international corporations).
Shawnee is served by the Shawnee Mission and DeSoto school districts. Shanee Mission, the third largest in Kansas, received a gold medal rating from Expansion Management Magazine and was the only district in Kansas to be named to the 2011 AP Achievement list. DeSoto has established a continual quest for excellence, as 2nd in the county in math and with 100% of schools achieving Adequate Yearly Progress and the Kansas Standard of Excellence from the state.
